The weekend of the 6th-8th August was a pretty busy one for all the SVS. On Friday night the Troop and the Unit held a crossing of the line ceremony and investiture in full parade uniform where the batch of new recruits were officially welcomed into the Unit (even though they had already been attending Unit meetings & activities).

After a short and sweet ceremony the Unit headed off to Debono's house to talk a bit more about the Unit and it's plans for the near future. As most of you guys know the Climbing Wall has been the Unit's main project over the last couple of years, so with that now in almost full operation the Unit needed to set their eyes on something brand new. I won't go into detail for now until things are set in stone but be rest assured...the Unit is goin' places!

Later on the Unit joined up with the Troop and Group Leaders again and headed to Vecchia Napoli for a good meal to celebrate the beginning of a new journey for our recruits - a journey which they know by now is gonna be no walk in the park!

The next morning the Unit met up again though this time with fins and masks for a session of diving with our instructor Jacques. We headed to St. Julian's bay where the Ventures got the chance to learn a couple of techniques along with some procedures.

That night the Unit met up once again at Cremona's house for a good ol' Unit BBQ which turned out to be quite the feast with spare ribs, sausages, and even a couple of salads! After the feast the BBQ turned into a story telling session with the older guys sharing some of their epic memories of past activities and their basic training along with the new guys sharing some of their experiences.

Next up on the calendar is the eagerly awaited Training Camp & NAVEX II - a weekend of pretty much anything Scouting! More on that coming soon....

Bridging distances....

Comparing the structure to the Weihe Grand bridge in China or the Bang Na expressway in Thailand (the two longest bridges in the world) might be pushing it a bit but it was surely a great achievement for the SVS!

The Unit met up bright and early on Saturday morning to load the truck with the poles, lashings and other equipment that would make up the structure later on. Like in previous pioneering activities the Unit decided to use the old shooting ranges in Pembroke as the venue for the activity, with it's close proximity to the sea plus being not too far away from home!

As I mentioned in the previous post the Ventures decided to move away from the usual monkey bridge type of structure, so this time they went about constructing a drawbridge! They also decided to use a more efficient way of lowering and lifting the bridge, instead of using a pulley system the ventures got their hands on a good ol' trailer winch which worked out perfectly.

After a couple of hours of construction and final tinkering the structure was finally finished and the ventures got the chance to play around with the bridge for a while. Though as time was pressing and Mario our truck driver waiting they decided to take a last couple of photos on the structure and start striking.

Next up on the SVS calendar was the much anticipated crossing of the line & ikla, where the new guys finally became official members of the Sliema Venture Unit and then the Dive & BBQ!

P-coy's 1st Meeting & NAVEX I

With summer in full swing and the SVS back in full V-mode, a new batch of recruits were welcomed to their first Unit meeting, where they got the chance to get to know exactly what the Unit is, what it does and how it goes about doing it - basically a summary of what's to come! At their next meeting the recruits dove into their first instructions session, navigation, which was to prepare them for most new recruits' first field activity - NAVEX I.

The first navigation exercise takes the form of a walk-through talk-through were the recruits are accompanied by the older ventures and leaders. Besides actually practising their navigation the recruits get to learn new skills and practice them first hand in the field, skills such as navigating by the stars, walking on a bearing and boxing, and at the same time fine-tuning the skills they already knew such as triangulations.

The route took the fresh recruits from Mizieb, to the now famous Qolla ta' Brared where they got the chance to have a break and cook something warm, through Bidnija and along the Victoria Lines in Dwejra and finally finishing up in Bingemma. Unfortunately there wasn't time to hold the casualty evacuation, but I guess we're just going to have to make NAVEX II a little bit longer and harder...oh and the CASEVAC too!

Next was the Pioneering activity - this time the Unit decided to move away from the usual monkey bridge to something a bit more...medieval!

Roundin' Up...

Even with everybody gettin' down n' dirty with exams the SVS pushed through their piles of books and notes to get into the fresh air for some good ol' SVS time. After a well earned recovery from Easter Camp the SVS showed up in full force and uniform for the Annual Parade in Valletta. Despite the heat and confusion the SVS along with the rest of the Group marched on proudly down Republic street to salute the President and the top dogs of IHQ which included newly appointed Chief Commissioner Leslie Bonnici.

Next up came the much anticipated Graduation Exercise (or GRADEX as we like to call it). All eyes were on Tom as the activity was prepared solely for him as he joined the Unit as a totally new member and the next batch of recruits weren't due to come in for some time. Though this didn't seem to dampen his spirits one bit as he pushed through the day nav, night nav and then finally the MEDEVAC! Kudos Tom!

A couple of weeks later in May, Chris (a.k.a. Il-Griz), Tom, ASL Rubei and Cremona signed up in pairs for was has become the annual PAS (President's Award Scheme) Adventure Race. The race took the form of a Triathlon type of event including several stages which were an aerial ropeway, a 5km trek/jog, followed by a 12km cycle, 1.2km canoeing then finally an beach obstacle course. The 2 teams got some pretty great results coming in 12th and 14th out of 35 teams. Well done guys!

In June once exams were dying down the Unit finally held the O-coy investiture, though this time they decided to have the ceremony outdoors at the Qolla ta' Brared. The scene couldn't have been more perfect as you could probably tell from the photos ;) Later in the month the Unit held a joint activity with the Xaghra Venture Unit as part of Cremona's leadership training. The activity took the form of an overnight hike in Gozo, passing through some rugged coastline paths and lush valleys along the way.

That was basically the last couple of months in a nutshell! Right now the Unit is busy with the new recruits, their basic training and the rest of the summer programme, so keep tuned for some more epic tales of adventure!

Kandersteg Update

Guten Tag.. ich heisse Mo$es und komme aus Malta. This is an exclusive update from Switzerland where I sneaked off to a few days ago to check up on Chris at Kandersteg International Scout Centre. Below is what he had to say:

Hi fellow SVS! Everything's going well here, I'm almost at the end of training now and Switzerland's been great. I'll just fill you in on some of the stuff I've been up to so far. First stop was Milan, where I met Sara from Italy and spent the afternoon going round some of the main sights. Already learnt quite a few important things there, like not to trust any over-helpful people standing near a ticket machine in the train station. They might offer to buy your tickets for you, instead getting the most expensive option and then running off with your change. If you're ever in Milan, you might also want to watch out in Piazza Duomo, where you get surrounded by sellers tying 'free' bracelets round your wrist and then asking for a donation towards Africa for their kindness.

We arrived at Kandersteg train station in the evening and were picked up by the centre's van. The next day we didn't start training till 1700, so I spent the morning going round Thun and Spiez with some new friends. The Alpine scenery was amazing, other than the sun which only made its first appearance over a week later. Training started that evening and from then on the days all seem to fade into each other. We've had some days based mostly at the centre with training on reception, programme, campsite, catering and a few other topics.

On other days we got to head out into the mountains for some great hikes. First off was D-Day when we were woken up early for a team challenge round Kandersteg village, ending with a cable car ride up to Oeschinensee and a walk to the lake there. It was actually really interesting seeing how much it had shrunk compared to when I was last there in September. Since we were there practically at the end of summer all the ice had melted and come down into the lake, which hasn't happened yet this year.

Then came the Cheesery Hike, where we walked up to a traditional cheesery in the mountains right above the village. From there you ('re meant to anyway) have an amazing view of the whole village and the surroundings, but with all the fog on the day we just saw a white haze all around. Our next hike was up to the Uschinenhutte which is leased to the centre and we stayed overnight there. The weather that day was freezing, so to warm up we squashed as many people as possible into one room. In the morning we hiked further up for the Three Valleys hike, and had even more cold weather and snow. I was freezing all day because I hadn't packed enough warm clothes and the zip on my jacket broke..though it was still really cool being in so much snow for the first time ever. We had to turn back before completing the hike because of the weather conditions and walked back to the centre.

Two days ago we set off for the Lötschen Pass hike, by far the best day so far. At some points we were up to our knees in snow, and also got to see the sun for the first time here! Other than all the hiking and training sessions we also went rafting in the Simme river and went to the village for some indoor climbing, both of which were great.

Yesterday we had our gradutaion ceremonies to mark the end of training (or general training anyway) and this morning got told which departments everyone's in. I got into programme and shall be mostly guiding hikes, but first have one more week of training and need to be assessed at the end. Looking like it's going to be a great summer :)

Last thing I'd like to say if you're still reading is that KISC has already shown me how useful and relevant the SVS training has been to me in many ways, and I would like to pass on this message especially to the new recruits. I hope everyone has a rewarding Basic Training experience and makes the most of this summer, and see you all when I get back!

Easter Camp - Day 4

After a long night in the cave it was time to head back to campsite to get cleaned up and kick off the last day of camp. Later in the day a GRADEX was set to take place for Tom, though since he wasn't able to come to camp due to illness, the ventures decided to cut camp a bit short and leave at about tea time (after tea that is!). The morning's activities mainly consisted of striking the Unit's area which entailed taking down the camo-net, packing away any equipment into the Unit box and sadly taking apart the epic Unit Bus. After which Debono enlightened us with an interesting SPI (or spirital activity) dealing with countries with different religions, highest and lowest GDPs, and the numerous wars that are actually ongoing all round the world - most of which never make the news headlines.

After some more reflection and discussion the Unit got ready for their last meal at Verdala in 2010. With their food slowly digesting in their stomachs the ventures continued to spruce up the area and make sure no equipment was left behind, after which came tea time...

Tea time came and went, though the ventures remained after they decided to enjoy every bit of Verdala till the very end of the day. Most of the ventures headed home after supper while Cremona and Abela stayed on to play a nightgame with the Troop then headed for home.

Next up on the SVS Calendar is the St. George's Day parade, a chance for the Unit to strut their stuff along with the the rest of the Group through Valletta.

A new day..a new adventure!

Easter Camp 2010 - Day 3

If you thought that the second day was jam packed just wait and see day 3! The morning kicked off with the usual routine of PT, self admin, flag break and breakfast, which was followed by an interesting treasure hunt themed estimation and ranging challenge prepared by Cremona. The challenge took the form of a treasure hunt, where the ventures would need to find clues in order to find the location of each challenge and the next clue. Each challenge consisted of a series of estimation and ranging exercises which the ventures needed to complete before proceeding to the next one. As lunch time neared the ventures headed back to the Unit's area to prepare the climbing gear for after lunch.

"Top of the World" - Gharghur

After a nutritious lunch and the much anticipated arrival of the VSL, the ventures packed themselves and the gear into the leaders' cars and headed for Gharghur in search of a great session of climbing. We were also joined by some other friendly climbers who happened to be at the site which is popularly known as 'Top of the World' for it's great views of the northern part of the island. Though as the ventures quickly realised, it wasn't gonna be an easy session! The ventures attempted several routes though only a few managed to reach the top...though no need to worry as there's gonna be loads of opportunities to practice in the near future!

As dusk started to set in, the Unit went about striking the rigging and heading back to campsite in preparation for a traditionally epic night! Like in the past couple of Easter Camps the Unit decided to have one night dedicated entirely to having a great time together and literally just hanging out as a Unit in a truly scouting environment. This time the Unit also decided to bring along a couple of ex-ventures who had decided to move on to other things, namely George and Keith. The night took the form of a steak night, where each venture cooked a great piece of meat and some also added a peppered sauce! The night was filled with loads of laughs and memories, and coupled with George's guitar skills, provided a great atmosphere.

Easter Camp 2010 - Day 2

The first full day of activities at Easter Camp, and what a day it was. With a visit from the president H.E. George Abela, the Unit Olympics, potholing and some more karting, the day was already looking pretty jam packed. After breakfast, the Unit went about preparing the site for the President's visit along with the equipment for the morning's activities. During the visit, the President was given a short tour of the campsite as well as a brief demonstration of how the Unit Bus goes about doing its business.

Once we said our goodbyes, the Unit dove right into the first activity, the Unit Olympics! In the SVS's own version of the Olympics, 5 categories form the competition, namely; High Jump, Shotput, Discuss, Hurdles and Archery.

After a great deal of preparation and setting up, the Unit headed for lunch to gain that extra bit of energy for the competition ahead. The competition turned out to be a gruelling test of stamina and accuracy, especially in the last part of the competition, archery. At the end of competition, after careful calculations the final standings where as follows: 1st AVSL Abela, 2nd Zack, 3rd Chris 'Il-Griz', 4th RJ and last but not least AVSL Cremona.

The day continued with a welcome tea break, after which the Unit ventured down into Buskett valley for a session of potholing. The Unit plunged into two passage systems, the first of which was cut short due to a wall which seemed to be collapsing. The second proved to be a long system of narrow and low service tunnels for a water pipe. The cold water and sticky mud made the going pretty tough though made for an interesting pothole.

As night began to set in the Unit headed back to camp for a good shower and a well deserved hot supper. After which they headed off campsite for some down time before returning to campsite to continue repairs on the kart and a hot cup of chocolate.

A very long way...

Easter Camp 2010 Day 1

On Tuesday 30th April the Unit met up in the early afternoon outside what is known to be Malta's best camping site. It isn't the best because of its facilities like heated showers, toilets and electricity plugins around the campsite, in fact you won't find any of these. The campsite provides an electricity and water point...and that's pretty much it, though they also include a 16th century fortified palace, a vast area of lush woodland (the greenest in all of Malta) and some pretty tight security! Yeah you've guessed it...the SVS along with the rest of the Group have set up camp once again in the Verdala Palace grounds!

The Unit kicked off the epic adventure by getting settled in which meant setting up the camo net, preparing their bivouacs and getting the Unit's area ship shape. After finishing off the last bits of setting up the ventures got stuck into their first activity - the highly anticipated "UNIT BUS". The idea evolved from several smaller ideas.. a mobile catapult, a downhill go-kart, a go-kart big enough to fit the whole Unit... you can see where the Unit went on from here!

Basically what started out as small individual ideas turned into what became literally a Unit Bus with a catapult lashed onto the back. The Unit then took the time to push it to its full potential, increasing the number of people slowly until the whole Unit was on-board....and what a sight it was!

After what became a whole day of tinkering and adrenaline (...and breakages!) the Unit packed it in for their first night at camp. The next day would take the Unit thousands of years back in time and then later on deep beneath the Earth's crust!

Clay Pigeon Shooting

On a sunny morning in March, the Unit ventured to the Bidnija shooting range, for a good session of clay pigeon shooting with their instructor Grezzju. Upon arriving at the range a Double Trap competition was taking place on the two shooting fields, and since the Unit were a bit early for their session they got the chance to see the Pros in action... and what a site it was! The sound of each shotgun going off was pretty impressive!

Most of the Unit had already been clay pigeon shooting when they visited the range back in the beginning of summer in 2009. So this time round the competition was set to be a bit more exciting.

The first 5 training shots proved that some had improved at their aiming, while others....well let's just say they didn't fare as well....

After everyone had their 5 practice shots the competition began with the first round of 10 shots each followed by the 2nd and final round with another 10 shots. The first 10 shots produced some pretty interesting results, with Cremona and Zack leading the race, while Ryan and Chris fighting for 3rd and last but unfortunately the least was Abela.

When all 20 shots were fired the scoreboard was pretty much the same, with Zack and Cremona tied in 1st with 17 hits each, followed by Chris 'Il-Griz' in 3rd with 15 hits, Ryan in 4th with 12, and poor Abela with a measly 6 hits. Regarding the tie, according to ISSF rules it is the shooter with most hits in the 1st round that takes the win, so the winner of the day was Zack, kudos dude.

Bowling Activity

As a break from the rigorous ongoing training programme, the Unit decided to hit the bowling lanes to let off some steam and share a couple of good laughs. We also had the pleasure of Debono's company for the activity since he's been quite busy with his studies.

We then all headed out for a good debrief and talked about some epic adventures for the future... I'll spill some info on that when the ball gets rolling on the plans, though for now it's still in the pipeline.

Fire & Cooking and Climb (20-21 April)

Last Saturday the Unit met up for another night in the field, though this time the objective wasn't so much training based as the last couple of activities. This time the Unit prepared a 4 course meal deep in Mosta Valley. The menu consisted of bruschetta, followed by lasagne, cube roll steak with roast potatoes, and finally a carrot, orange and walnut cake.

The members constructed two fires; a mud oven for the bruschetta, lasagne, potatoes and cake, and a simple open fire on which they grilled the steaks and cooked up the sauce for the lasagne. By the end of the night (or actually early morning) you can imagine the guys were pretty stuffed and knackered - I wouldn't have minded another bite of cake but that's just me! After putting out the fires and clearing the site we moved on to construct our bivouacs for the night and got a well deserved couple of hours of rest before the climb in the morning.

A chilly night and a couple of snooze buttons later, the Unit woke up to the picturesque view of the lush valley, though there wasn't much time to sit about. By 0830 the bivouacs where struck, the site was swept and all the ventures and their equipment were at the top of the valley ready to rendez-vous with Debono.

During the climb the members got the chance to start testing out their climbing abilities, since in the future we're going to be doing a lot (...and I do mean A LOT) of climbing with the completion of our indoor climbing wall. Unfortunately towards the end of the morning we were joined by some unruly abseilers who got a bit in the way, so we decided to call it a day and head to Rabat for La Classica (post-climb refreshments) to close off the activity.

Next on the SVS calender is a climb with the rest of the leaders of the group this Saturday, then NAVEX III on the 12th. Untill then, just want to give a shout out to Abela who finished the Malta Half Marathon this morning - kudos man.

Training Camp & NAVEX II (5th-6th Feb)

This year, with the basic training being held in winter, the recruits are coming up against some pretty interesting weather as they found out during the first night nav 3 weeks ago. Though luckily for the recruits, the weather let out last weekend while they were in the field once again. The objective this time was intensive training on basic skills such as knotting, bivvy building and bandages & slings, while also incorporating other skills such as field cooking & nutrition, stoves and some drill.

On the 2nd day, after a session on bandages & slings, the recruits readied themselves for their 2nd navigation exersize - though this time the recruits will be navigating during the day and on their own, putting their individual skills to the test. The 16km route took the recruits from the cliffs of Imtahleb, through Rabat and down into Ghar il-Kbir where they carried out a casualty evacuation.

Next weekend the Unit will be back in the field for some fire & cooking and a climb on Saturday. A baptism of Fire...

NAVEX I

As anyone who went through the Basic Training can tell you, the first night nav is no easy feat. Though last Saturday morning at approx 6am, the recruits laid down their packs at the finish point after a night of icy wind, pouring rain, and anything else mother nature could throw at them!

The route took them over several hills, through semi-flooded tracks, alongside a 19th century moat, and not to mention some pretty nice views. These elements gave the recruits the perfect opportunity to put their navigation theory to the test, and to practice some new techniques such as aiming off, boxing and back-bearings.

After a short break in one of the tombs and a quick snack, the recruits strapped on their kits for the last time to run a Casualty Evacuation scenario in which they practised several lifts and transporting a casualty.

In the meantime, Debono and Abela had arrived on the scene to give a helping hand while Chris (a.k.a. Griz) cooked up a well-deserved plate of penne pesto for the DS before we headed for home.

A Legacy Lives on...

As I write this post a batch of our eager members are packing their gear, shining their boots, checking and re-checking their kits, and preparing themselves both physically and mentally for the journey ahead as many have done before them throughout the years.

Tonight these lucky members will be embarking on the first episode of an EPiC and prosperous adventure, one which will take great personal effort yet in the end will be something they'll remember for the rest of their lives... For those veterans reading this I think you already know what I'm going on about, but for all the folks at home it's the Basic Training.

I won't stay going into details for now, but I'll shed some light on the Basic Training programme a bit later on...

SVS XMAS BASH 2009

And what a bash it was!

We also decided to invite some ex members of the Unit who've left us recently, the more the merrier!

Like last year's xmas party, the Unit decided to stick close to home and have the party at HQ with the prospect of hitting the town later on. Unlike last year where everyone got a dish and we all mixed and matched, the catering this year fell under the capable hands of Chris (a.k.a. Il-Griz), who whipped up a bitchin' Fenkata for around 13 guys which included pasta with rabbit sauce, then a saucy plate of rabbit pieces (no onions or garlic).

While we let the rabbit and spaghetti brew in our stomachs, we set about clearing up the table in preparation for the night to come...

After which we enjoyed some light-hearted games, accompanied by some red-bull which Zack gladly provided and not to mention some "Gulepp" that Chris whipped up at home!

Then, as per tradition, Debono delivered the prestigious VSL's Xmas speech in which he went through the highs n lows of 2009 and his thought's on 2010 and beyond.

New this year was the addition of the unofficial SVS Awards. This year Debono decided it was appropriate to give some kudos to those guys that gave it their all this year, the awards included;

We then continued with the festivities in true SVS fashion...games, jokes, survival techniques, kings, queens and more! After which we decided to pack it in for the night and save up energy for the upcoming Christmas festivities.

Abseil with the Troop

On Sunday 13th December we joined up with the Troop for the last day of their annual Leapfrog activity to take them abseiling. We decided to go to Wied Ix-Xaqqa since it’s probably one of the easier abseil locations around the island. Over twenty Scouts were present and all got to abseil around 25 metres!

After each Scout had had his turn, we had some time to abseil ourselves. CXO Zack and AVSL Ian tried their hands at a forward rappel, along with ASL Simon. Zack also practiced lowering an abseiler from Bottom Safety position.

All in all it was a great Sunday morning and afternoon, which I’m sure the Scouts really enjoyed and will be telling their friends all about all week at school!

As for us, the year hasn’t finished yet, with our next activity being a well deserved Christmas Party, and then a pioneering activity with the AFM!

Survival Weekend

And we’re back in the field! This weekend was survival weekend for the SVS, which meant the Ventures (and leaders!) could only take the bare necessities- basically some water, survival bag, penknife and first aid kit- otherwise, the world around them was their oyster!

After a kit inspection by the VSL and AVSL (where it was found that some funny Ventures thought they could take luxuries like coffee and sugar!), we made our way to Ghar il-Kbir, which would serve as the main base for the weekend. That night we made a fire and kept it going the whole night, while running a Stag Duty system. VS Chris also decided it would be nice to make carob syrup, or “Gulepp” in Maltese (sometimes confused with Gillette by some of us). Some of us didn’t go anywhere near it, other braver folk drank it all night long!

As soon as we got up the next day we got straight to work. Two of us carried out reconnaissance within the immediate surroundings, whilst the others kept the fire going for lunch. The area around Ghar il-Kbir is quite unforgiving with regards to food collection, but nonetheless the SVS managed to make a soup out of what they found. With the help of an OXO cube, we made a fennel, Saghtar and rocket soup.

After lunch two of us collected Baghjtar tax-xewk to help keep us going, and then it was time for more reconnaissance. That night we made another survival soup, this time with some rather more interesting and nutritious ingredients than those we found earlier.

With the fire going all night and warm soup to keep the night watch awake, Sunday morning was a rather slow one. By around eleven o’clock we were out of the cave and went for a well deserved Fenkata along with Cremona who met us in Rabat to join in on the pig-out.

Of Mines and Men...

Day with the Engineers of the AFM's 3rd Regiment

Our post begins way back in October when Abela, Cremona and Corrieri bumped into Ex-Sliema VSL Capt. Stroud of the AFM's 3rd Regiment at the AFM's Open Day.

Needless to say one thing lead to another, and by the end of the conversation the Unit (along with Corrieri haha) were invited to join the Engineers of the 3rd Regiment for a day at their barracks.

The day finally came, and the Unit showed up in full force (not to mention full SVS fashion wear).

The first part of the day consisted of a presentation, which mostly involved mine technology, mine laying, mine breaching, the equipment they use, and lots of other bits and bobs.

After a typical Maltese picnic with galletti, gbejniet, salami and twistees, the Engineers lead us to a "mine field" which they laid out for us to put the theory we learnt into practice. While Abela and Corrieri went first to try their hand at mine breaching, the rest of the Unit went on to try out the rest of the gear which they prepared for us.

As the day moved on, and everyone put their de-mining skills to test, we moved onto building a quick aerial rope-way, which they would use to transport equipment and if necessary personnel over an obstacle.

As dusk started to set in we decided to start packing it in. After a group photo in front of the AFM's emblem, we discussed with the Engineers the prospect of having some joint activities. I won't give anything away, but we already have some plans in the pipeline for 2010.

Carboot Sale

While most people were probably still out on the town during the early hours of Sunday morning, the SVS were gearing up for a fundraising car-boot sale. For the past couple of weeks the members brought in all that stuff at home that's been cluttering up the cupboards, in hope of turning their trash into cash!

The items on sale ranged from magazines to encyclopedias, kitchen jars to ornaments, t-shirts to suits, PC games to motherboards!....and well a whole lot of other stuff. The start of the sale was pretty slow since it was only about 6am, though as the morning moved on, waves of people began to flock to our make-shift stall (which was mostly out of the back of a landrover!).

Towards the end of the morning, and with a good bulk of the stuff sold, the members started selling the rest in bulk!

At the end of the day the Unit managed to raise approx 2ooeuro - 12 of which was donated to Razzett tal-Hbiberijja. Well worth it to say the least! Next up on the SVS calendar is the Survival Weekend, where our ventures will take on the elements and live off "the fatta' the land".

100 Year Celebrations Finale & Imtahleb Abseil

Here’s to another 100 years!

As the oldest surviving group outside the UK, we made sure that we ended the centenary celebrations with a bang. Following a Gala Dinner on Friday night, today the whole group met at HQ for a full day of activities.

We’re proud to say that the Sliema Group does things differently- and today was no exception. To end off our year-long celebrations, each section invited all groups from the North District to join in on the fun for the day.

After mass, as the Pack began some crafts and the Troop set out on a very interesting treasure hunt, the SVS prepared for the much awaited Imtahleb abseil.

The site was simply superb. A pleasant descent down a cliff face right down to sea level- our ropes were just about long enough! After we had three long jumps it was time to call it a day and head back to HQ where we debriefed the day and chowed down on some packed lunch left-overs with the Troop leaders.

Next up on the calendar is the fundraising car-boot sale this Sunday at Razzett tal-Hbiberijja, so the ventures will be getting tones of not-so-beloved possessions and selling them for a bargain.

Canoe Expo and 2-Star Award

Building on the success of the first Canoe Expo organised last year, 5 members of the Unit completed their MCF 2 Star Award between the 8th and 9th August. Three of the ventures, myself and a special guest met up on Friday night at L-Aħrax. From there we walked down to Slugs Bay for a short swim and then made it back up to set up bivoacs for the night. The ventures tried to get an early night..which turned out to be quite a challenge because of all the mosquitos.

The next morning Tom and Allen joined and we met up with our instructor Clarke, for what was going to be a full day out at sea. The ventures started off by brushing up on 1 Star stroke work, and once Clarke was satisfied proceeded to learn some new techniques.

After a lunch break it was straight back to the water for some rescue drills using several different techniques. Simon and Allen managed the eskimo roll in the process! Since we were spending the night at Mġiebaħ we returned to land to waterproof all the kits and load them in the kayaks. On the way to Mġiebaħ the team took turns at leading the group, while the others got creative with ways to create confusion to keep the leader busy. Allen decided this would be a good time to make a new friend and hide behind some boulders, waiting for the leader to notice his absence.

Once at Mġiebaħ the ventures set out on a search for firewood, supper couldn't come sooner after such a long day. There was one last adventure to go before dawn, a night paddle around the area. Definitely one of the highlights of the weekend from what I heard! Sounds like they got to see some bioluminescent bacteria too (bacteria in the sea which give off light when disturbed).. I was busy hunting in the meantime, the area's got quite a few rats of its own!

The next morning we returned to Għadira, where it was time to put all that the ventures had learnt to the test. Needless to say they all passed without difficulty, congratulations Tom, Simon, George, Allen and Chris! I'll just post one last picture of me with my kayak. Fundraising Carwash

As the SVS is a non-profit organisation, just like the Sliema Group and the Scout Movement as a whole, we try to gather as much funds as possible to keep the SVS boat afloat. We accomplish this by organising fund-raising activities throughout the year, such as Malta Marathon Sponsorships, Car-boot sales, Job-month and more.

This time round the Unit decided to organise a car wash to help raise the last funds needed for the completion of our very own climbing wall! The Ventures met up early on a sunny summer morning in July in Swieqi to turn the front of Zack's house into a fully functional carwash. And so they did!

Cars flowed in and out of the makeshift car-wash -which at the end of the day totaled to about 40 cars! It was hard work for the Ventures, but well worth it in the end. Good job guys and a big thank you to those who came to support our Unit!

PS - The Climbing Wall is now in its final stages of graffiti and painting! More info coming sooooon!

Iljieli Scoutin

Between the 31^st of July and 2^nd of August, the Sliema Front became alive with a strong scouting fever, organized by our Scout Group as part of our 100 year celebrations. There were games for the kids and the centenary photos on display. There was also a climbing wall up which attracted the attention and interest of most of the passers-by, and was tried by nearly all Cubs and Scouts alike.

As for the Unit, we pioneered a structure that displayed our abseiling equipment on one side and had an abseil wall on the other. On this wall Ventures took it in turns to demonstrate how to abseil down a flat surface, and how to war the abseil gear. On the second day, we started letting people try it for themselves and before we knew it we were constantly kitting up people to let them try their hands at the activity we love so much!

All other Scout Groups were invited to attend, and indeed many did turn up and joined in the fun. San Gwann Scout Group also put on a remarkable show, by dressing up in full parade uniform and playing the bagpipes.

Ljieli Skawtin was certainly a success, and hopefully helped to improve the image of Scouting to the public. Well done boys!

Joint Activity with Dingli Ventures

As you may have realized, this summer the SVS have been up to a lot of sailing, and this we were joined by none other than the Dingli Venture Scouts! The activity was held as part of the respective Units’ leaders’ IHQ Basic Adult Leadership Training Programme.

We met on a windy enough afternoon in Mellieha bay, where we were briefed by the people renting us the dinghies. They reminded us what to do were we to capsize, and to be careful of the boom when we tacked (change direction), since it has quite a hard swing (just ask Chris!!).

Since there was about 12 knots of wind blowing, the sailing was good, and we went as far as the fish farms and even further. We sailed both on a reach at some points and on a run at others. After about 2 hours at sea it was time to head back to base as the sun was going down.

We then walked up to the Red Tower and got the BBQ going. Whilst the flames turned to embers, we played a series of ice-breakers to get to know each other better.

As for food, some of us were more creative (and thus better fed!) than others. For many it was sausages or burgers, but a few enjoyed rib eye steaks!

A big prosit to the Ventures of the Dingli Scout Group, who helped make the activity a success. It’s always good to meet and take on new challenges with fellow Ventures from other groups!

Sailing Session at Vikings Club

Towards the end of July the Unit met up again for what was to be the 2nd of many sea-based activities this summer. This time the Unit ventured down to the Vikings Sailing Club at Haywharf in Marsamxetto harbour to get accustomed to sailing small craft and to have some fun on the water.

Before the ventures set out on their 18 ft wayfarer, the instructor gave a short safety briefing and explained the course on which they were to sail. They then set off, going round the course of 3 buoys utilising the steady breeze to the full.

After a couple of hours on the course and the Marsamxetto area, the sailors decided to pack it in for the day, so they packed in the sails and pulled the boat ashore and headed home in wait for the next water-based activity. Though this time the activity was on land... in the middle of Swieqi to be exact!

Aquatic Weekend

This summer the Unit has made it a point to have as many water-based activities as possible, ranging from sailing to kayaking, and possibly windsurfing too. And what better way was there to start this off than with a weekend filled with all of these?

The Ventures started off the Aquatic Weekend with a trip down to the Group Boathouse, where they used the canoes and went for a short trip to Spinola and back. We were later joined by the Troop who had also come down to the Boathouse for a swim. After moving the boats round and tidying up the boathouse, we returned to HQ where George, Tom and Zack cooked a meal for the Unit as part of their Venture Award.

Day 2 started with an early breakfast, to be at Għadira in time for a day out at sea. While Zack, Tom and Matteo completed their 1 Star Award, the rest of the Unit rented out some sit on top kayaks to explore the area. Following a lunch break we met up with Charles Tonna for the first Sailing Session of the summer, something we plan to build up on in the coming months. As the sun started to set we moved to L-Aħrax where we built bivvies for the night, and then gathered round a fire to cook supper.

The next morning we set off towards Anchor Bay for a snorkeling activity. Even though the wind had picked up preventing us from goign too far, we still managed to see some fish and plan to return there some day!

Mass Blogging!

A lot has changed since my last post way back in March! Including me! After a trip back to Africa, I realised what a lots been going on while I was away. Since the marathon in March, most of the Unit members started gearing up for exams, but it doesn't mean that nothing else happened! On the 6th-8th March the group opened its doors to the public as part of the 100 year anniversary activities. The group displayed a range of blown up pictures from the logbooks, the logbooks themselves and several bits and bobs where placed around hq.

Later on in March the SVS ventured to 'Top of the World' in Gharghur for an abseiling session. For the less experienced, this was a great opportunity to get some hands on experience with rigging, equipment, bottom safety, and some even tried going inverted! Now for a change of scenery... In early April the SVS, along with the rest of the group, took to the streets of Sliema for the Duluri procession. While prayers echoed in the streets of Sliema, every venture and scout, undoubtedly had something lingering at the back of their mind...yes you guessed it! Easter Camp! And who better to tell us all about the epic adventure than our very own Chriiiis...

"On the 6th April the SVS met up at Verdala Grounds, Buskett for what was definitely going to be an Easter Camp to remember. This year was a special one for the Unit, having 12 members present, much more than usual. Some of the highlights of camp were the perched tent (our pioneering project), a fenkata in a cave on Dingli Cliffs, *Battle of the Warlords, and some newly invented night games with a twist. More to follow soon..."

After that epic easter camp the SVS battoned down the hatches n got down n dirty with exams, ranging from 1st year 6th form to A-levels to 1st year University! At the peak of exams, the SVS took a short break from the books to show up in force for Annual Parade. And what a memorable one it was! With our 100 year anniversary in full swing, the group decided to make it known...in style! Most notably where the 2 ventures using powerisers, the track cart (Gladis) with a small banner being pulled along by scouts, and 2 cubs on their bicycles.

The SVS then met up again for a pre-summer BBQ at Cremona's house. Sadly this was to be the last activity for some of our venture scouts, namely Mallia Milanes, Ellul and a bonne voyage to our cheif of command Debono who will be returning back to us sometime at the end of summer.

The SVS have done it again!

Last Sunday three of our guys ran the Malta Half-Marathon...

George completed the 13.1mile route in 1hr55mins while Debono finished a bit later at 2hr12 and Allen at 2hr26. The three of them had a great time despite the cold wind which made the run quite uncomfortable.

The Troop were also at the event, helping out with the runners' bags in Depores Hall towards the finish line. As usual the atmosphere was great and everybody's support made all the difference!

Since we have a new guy within our ranks, I thought it would be a cool idea to give him a bit of a limelight and involve him in this blog entry... to write up about the last activity (the Bike Expo)

Mo$es: Tom, you decided to join the Sliema Scout Group at quite an old age (for a Scout) [Tom is 16]...what led you to take this decision?

Tom: I've known about the Sliema Scout Group for quite a while now and have several friends who are members and I've always been interested in the activities they do. I honestly have no clue as to why i never joined earlier, but some time ago my friend's told me about the Bike Expo (knowing that im a cycling enthusiast) and asked me if i wanted to tag along. So i suppose the idea of doing something with the scouts sort of sparked my decision to finally join...

Mo$es: Last weekend you took part in your first Unit Activity...what did you think of it?

Tom: I really enjoyed the Bike Expo and think it was a great activity. The weather on Saturday made cycling a bit more difficult but I enjoyed it nonetheless
Mo$es: Where there any differences between what you thought a Unit activity would be like before the expo and what it actually was like?

Tom: Not really. My expectations were about the same as what it was like, because since I already knew alot of the people who attend, they've often told me what it was like and told me about the stuff they do so I pretty much had a good idea of what we were going to do.

Mo$es: What was your favourite part of the Bike Expo?

Tom: Apart from the cycling, when we got to Ghar il-Kbir and lit a fire and ate....pretty much the whole expo to be honest =]

Mo$es: Mention something funny that happened at the Bike Expo?

Tom: Watching George powersliding on his leg. He didn't hurt so we can laugh at it now.

Mo$es: What was the Bike Expo Route like?

Tom: Challenging, but quite well balanced...if it wasnt for the strong winds it would have been easier.
Mo$es: Did anything go wrong?

Tom: nothing major...my bike chain got jammed (luckily just before we got to the cave) but i managed to fix it before we left the next morning...Chris's gears weren't working well and he therefore found it hard getting up hills..but he still managed to cycle well and didnt really hold up the group at all...

But before the abseil camp some of the Unit Members will be running the Malta Half Marathon (13.1miles) on the 1st of march while the rest of the Unit will be helping out the Marathon staff by handing out water or powerade along the route. We have quite a challenging March coming up... should be exciting!

On the 3rd of February we decided to brave the cold windy weather to hold out meetings outdoors. We built a mud oven and baked an upside down pear cake; which ended up looking more like a pair of caked upside downs!

The members who took part in this Gradex (and successfully completed it) were George, Andrew, Chris, Zack and Ryan. They're now almost ready to be invested and take on more challenges within the Unit. They planned on embarking on a Bike Expo this weekend although the weather is looking bleak. We also have an abseil training camp planned since some of the members are working on their Basic Abseiler award. Easter Camp is also soon upon us, and although the N-coy members will probably not join us for this because of their A-levels it will no doubt serve as a good bonding activity for the rest of the Unit (which is pretty much bonded like super-glue already) and allow us to take on some seriously cool activities.

We also have a new member in our midst -- Tom. He joined our Unit to take on some adventurous challenges and enjoy the outdoors properly...well Tom, you've come to the right place! Welcome to the team.

The O-Coy take the challenge...

On the 6th-8th February, members of the O-coy took up a challenge, initially set by the VSL, to carry out the assessment part of the basic training (the pioneering, written tests and Gradex) all in one weekend. The aim of the activity was to give the O-coy the opportunity to work as a team and show off their Scouting skills which by now should be of SVS Standard!

The activity began at HQ at 1800 with the construction of a tower outside HQ. The following morning the Recruits carried out their written tests; with questions on First Aid, Pioneering, Navigation, Estimation and Ranging and Scouting History. On the whole everybody did well although there were some recruits who faltered in one of the areas... I'm sure they will make an effort to sharpen their Scouting knowledge so as to keep up the standard of skills within the Unit!

Following the tests we set out on the Gradex part of the assessment, with the Day Nav starting from Bahrija Cliffs. The recruits walked all afternoon making their way South towards Siggiewi and back up to Buskett where they spent a few hours sleeping under bivvies. In the early hours of the morning they started the Night Nav which took them from Manikata across the Northern part of Malta, ending at the Qolla ta' Brared. On this knoll we carried out quite an intense and sophisticated medevac which included evacuation by (imaginary) helo.

Everybody was knackered by 10:00 when we headed home. It was a pity that not all the O-coy could make it to this event as the team really pulled together, especially during the Medevac and on the Night nav...

Abseiling & Climbing at Wied Ix-xaqqa

On the 31st of January we went out for our first abseil of the year at Wied Ix-Xaqqa, Limits of Siggiewi. We rigged two abseil exits and a climb giving the ventures ample opportunity to try out various techniques on the cliff face including practicing falling, locking, bottom safety, forward rappel and more. We were once again joined by our abseil instructor and supervisor Andrew.

2009....SVS UNIT-TEA!!!

Abela - Abseiling

It's a new year (I know I'm a month and a half late on this!) and we're up to a whole lot of stuff. Things have been a little bit hectic in the Universe of the SVS and we're gearing up for even more cool adventures.

The first of our endeavours in 2009 was an exploration of the maze-like tunnels underneath Fort Pembroke. This is within the premises of Verdala International School and thanks goes out to Ms Attard (a kind lady who works at the school!) who let us use the premises for the activity.

The tunnels were built as an escape route, towards the sea, by the British (who built the fort itself). They also served as a very large shelter during the war and we found loads of old rusty ammo boxes and other relics. There were old switch boards and electricity panels which must have been there for over 80 years! We also found lots of new stuff such as halloween decorations including a 5-foot coffin used by the current students of Verdala, and needless to say we had a blast messing around in there!

Within the moat the atmosphere was completely different --- this school is like a zoo! Apart from loads of cats and chickens there were also two, rather short and stout goats. We fed the animals and some Ventures tried to catch the goats but they stood no chance! Who thought that they could run so fast with such short legs??!

Hi all,
I'm finally back to posting on the blog.... sorry for the hold up but the new year season was crazy!

Here's a run down on some of the stuff we did in this time

We met up at HQ to do some admin stuff and the O-Coy members erected a swing outside HQ to show us their pioneering skills. We built the swing right near BP so that he could appreciate our great Scouting Skills!

Night Game in Buskett (16th December)

We met up at Buskett one Tuesday evening, to play a night game in the Valley. This was about 1.5-2 hrs long and involved one team being the fugitives who had to hide from the other team. The end results were that half of the fugitives got caught, while the other half remained free for the entire game. It wasn't all so straightforward for one, who got caught and then tried to escape... but this was to no avail! because he got caught again right away. We agreed that the battle was a tie, but as always...the war is not over!

SVS Xmas Bash 2008 (23rd December)

We gathered at HQ, again on a Tuesday evening, to celebrate Xmas together! There were traditional and not so traditional activities during the Party. We started off with a BIG xmas meal which included Spaghetti, Tortellini and "IAN-CHIKIN" (honey and mustard chicken).

We then continued with some, short, speeches. First George enlightened us with his Funny memories of 2008, including Rubei dropping his head torch into the chemical toilet at Easter Camp. The VSL then gave us his more serious speech which included the introduction to the SVS Unit Tea.... Unit-T is now the Unit's theme for 2009...

We followed up the meal with some partying, SVS-style. We spent the whole evening with father christmas hats and so looked like a mob of St Nicks celebrating their last day off before xmas eve! We were joined on the night by Skipper Timmy, Fusu and Miki (ex-SVS).

We were also joined by Kyle and CZ who moved on from the Unit to become leaders in the Pack this October. We used this activity as their farewell party (FOP)....Kyle and CZ joined the Unit in June 2006 and did various exciting things with us such as travelling to the UK for the Jamboree, attended the bomba Summer Camps at Austin's in Zabbar and an Easter Camp at Ghajn Tuffieha. They started training to be leaders within the Unit and by carrying out a Tour of Duty with the Pack in June of 2008.

Well, thats basically most of what we did in December 2009.
January was filled with exams and other exciting stuff such as Training for the Malta Half-Marathon. More on that, and other stuff we did in the next post,

.... that we are not sleeping!!!!!!!

despite the lack of posts on my blog, the SVS are still up to a number of projects and are taking on challenge after challenge.

I will soon be posting updates on our recent activities which included: the SVS Xmas Bash 2008, an exploration of Fort Pembroke and a night game held in wied il-luq (buskett).

what about the future???

2009 is a big year for our Group (we're celebrating our centenary)! What about the Unit? Well, the Unit is very healthy at the moment, with 16 active members, most of which are taking up various challenges including: the Half Marathon (13.1mile) on 1st of March, a 2-day bike expo (in February) and the O-Coy are taking the challenge and completing the Basic Training as a team!

Some of the recruits had participated and completed the GRADEX last november but will redo the activity along with the ones who hadn't done it during the first week of February. This is what the SVS spirit is all about!

We are also in the process of collecting sponsorhips for the marathon runners (5 of them last i checked) which will be donated wholly to the Commitato Aiutiamo Edoardo www.aiutiamoedoardo.it

Some of the older Unit members (those older than 18) are also in the process of training as leaders, both which IHQ and helping out with other sections of the Group. Although the Unit is designed for members until the age of 19 it's very good for the older ventures to learn, hands-on leadership skills in the hope that they later move on to another section as a leader.

ohh, and did i forget to mention the Kandersteg visit? The Sliema Scout Group will be travelling to Switzerland to spend some time in the Kandersteg Scout Centre (www.kisc.ch) and of course members of the Unit will be taking the opportunity to try out some of the cool activities on offer (sky diving, anyone?).

Right now, our meetings are being used for training in particular skill areas such as abseiling, climbing, potholing and for carrying out various parts of the Venture Training Programme (venture award & dolphin award). In April we will be heading out to Verdala Castle for a Group Camp...this should be one to remember!

Last Sunday (23rd November) we carried out short activities... The first was a scheduled clean up of our HQ and the second was a blood donation.

To add a twist to the couple of hours we spent cleaning HQ this week , the Unit members dressed up as maids. Some dressed as male maids, most as women and some actually wore their own maids clothes! Check out the sexy ladies as they pose before they rolled up their sleeves for some real hard work.

Right after the clean-up a few of us drove to the National Blood Bank, outside St Luke's hospital, to give blood. Some of the members who wanted to give blood and couldn't make it are going to go within the coming weeks. We're trying to give blood together every three months (the mininum space you must keep between donations). To give blood you must be over 17 years of age and satisfy a number of health and lifestyle criteria ... but if you are fit to give blood please do as it can save lives! All it takes is about an hour of your time.

I should soon be uploading pictures from our kayaking adventure... sorry for the delay but I'm awaiting a cd with the photos on them and rather post the whole entry together with photos.

If you like the creative fancy dressing we did on Saturday then you're in for a suprise at our Xmas party... our costumes are going to be much more elaborate than this!!

On saturday we're building a pioneering project at HQ in order for the recruits to practice pioneering and next weekend it's off to gozo for the biggest edition of the SVS Challenge yet!!

Next week we will be embarking on an expedition on canoe. This is a first for the SVS in recent times! The expo will take us to paradise bay, Mellieha, Fekruna, Mgiebah & Comino where we will be exploring various sea caves and practicing our canoeing technique and ultra- lightweight camping! This is sure to be one of those weekends to remember... that is unless the weather forces us to postpone the activity!

The Unit organised a day out for the cubs which involved a hike in the region of Mosta Valley followed by a session of fire building and cooking - lunch included burgers and sausages amongst other delights.

After lunch we played some fun games in Mosta Valley including prisoners and had some instructions organised by the Pack leaders and Ventures. It was quite an adventurous and fun day for all.

Luckily the weather was quite good yesterday and had the activity been held today instead we would be holding tests for the swimmers badge in Mosta Valley!!

Our next activity should be a canoe expo being held in conjunction with Rugged Coast Adventure, throughout the weekend of 6th-9th November but this is highly weather dependent! Throughout the weekend we will be exploring various sea caves along the Northern Coast of Malta and Comino.

We didn't start the fire....

...ok maybe we did, but it was all planned out and everything. For ou last Tuesday meeting we met up in a secret outdoor location to practice out fire lighting techniques. This was carried out after a suggestion by the new CXO (who until a few weeks ago was the one before the old CXO) Ian. This meeting kind of broke the monotony of our usual indoor meetings during which we usually settle alot of admin work but don't get to do much of those outdoor Scouting Skills which we like ever so much.

As with our regular meetings the attendance was sky high and about 14 of us met under the clear star filled sky that night. Apart from the fire lighting, tea brewing and marshmallow roasting the meeting was similar to one we'd have at HQ. The agenda included the written tests for those ventures which hadn't as yet had a chance to carry them out and an SPI (spiritual) exercise organised by our Spiritual Director Alan.

Sam has been in contact with Akela David, planning a joint activity with the cub pack which is to be held this coming Saturday. The activity will include a hike, in the region of Mosta Valley, a fire and cooking exercise and various other games in which the Ventures will mix with the cubs for hours of mayhem and adventure.

SVS - Back to School!!!

Hi all,

The meaning of this post's title is twofold. The obvious meaning is the fact that it's now been about a month since the Unit members (and leaders got back to their school routine). The new guys have just started their adventure in post-secondary school (jc, naxxar and the like), some others have started second year and will soon sit for their A-levels while the older guys have started out their university days in various courses at tal-Qroqq. I am no longer a student (unfortunately) but for how much longer did you think I could live the student life? Isn't it enough that I've got three postgraduate degrees and an honorary degree from Harvard??

The second meaning is that our last activity was done in conjunction with St Edward's College - we attended the College's Fair and set up various gadgets for the use of the visitors.

The weekend of the 17th-19th October was one of those weekends when all three of the sections of the Sliema Group have activities. The Troop leaders set up a network of pcs at HQ so that the Troop could participate in the JOTI (jamboree on the internet) which is held once a year. The Pack also participated and our HQ was used as a Hub for the rest of the North District -- some other Scout Groups visited our HQ to use our facilities.

Although the Joti was a fantastic experience it's another story all together- my story involves the Unit at the St Edward's Day fair. On Friday evening we set off for the College grounds together with Skipper Timmy and QM/ASL Mark.

Under the cover of darkness we set up an obstacle course and a catapult which were to be used the following morning. After an entertaining dinner party we used the college grounds for a night game -- Tango & Delta . Some of us bivvied amongst the trees while others sheltered close to the class rooms. The night was quite uneventful and the weather (which was forecast for thunderstorms) had kept except for the lightening which could be seen in the distance.

We awoke bright and early on sunday morning and were joined by Akela/AGSL David, ACSL/Riki tiki tavi Kirsten, ASL/QM Mark and a bunch of excited cubs who got to be the first people to try out the obstacle course. The course was quite challenging and although all of the ventures could finish it the best time was reached by our own llama with a time of 1min7secs.

People soon started arriving at the school and after mass (which was held at 10:00) our stalls became crowded with interested kids and parents. The highlight of our corner of the fair must have been the catapult from which we fired soaking sponges--- we had some very energetic targets (the cubs!) that kept running around making it difficult to hit.

The decent weather lasted until the early afternoon when a savage downpour commenced. We had to strike everything in the rain and leave ASAP.

O-Coy Gradex - "I love it when a plan comes together"

The O-Coy Gradex was held last Saturday- the 5 participants and directing staff met up at HQ for a briefing and the written tests. At noon our driver Charles arrived to ship us off to the starting point of the Day Nav which was in Birzebugia close to Borg in-Nadur.

The sky did not hold up for the recruits who had to endure the on/off showers throughout the day nav. They trekked mostly on the southern coast passing by Torri tal-Wardija and ending up at Ghar Lapsi where we set up bivvies for the night. Some built lean-to bivvies while others set up camp in a cave and some creative fellow built a house out of doors and other furniture he found lying around. The sky had cleared up by 0100 when the Unit awoke to prepare for transit to the night nav starting point.

The recruits took off their blindfolds somewhere along the Dingli Cliffs where very little was visible except the stars, sea and some lights in the distance. Some managed to discern Mtarfa and the Knisja tad-Dumnikani in Rabat and carryout back bearings; others worked out their location by comparing the roads and shape of the cliffs to the map.

The night nav took our Recruits further north towards Mgarr and Zebbiegh, up to Hotba ta San Martin and ending at Dwejra.

The SAR & medevac was carried out at Dwejra with two casualties who had fallen unconcious amongst the trees and broken buildings. Both were saved in time and treated accordingly.

Although the Directing Staff still have to calculate the walking times and incident points all the 5 recruits completed the Gradex so it's looking good for now.

On Tuesday we're going out for pizza to celebrate a job well done... and next week we're off to Gozo for a weekend of SVS mayhem!

Canoe Training Session

On Saturday 21st some of our members attended a one-day canoe training session with Clarke from Rugged Coast Adventure. The session include instruction and practice of several paddling and safety techniques. We played various training games and practiced capsizing and righting ourselves in record time.

The activity was held at Mellieha Bay and the training was part of a programme which we've been carrying out all summer... in November we should be holding a two-night canoe expo which might involve going to Comino and exploring several sea caves!

The following Tuesday meeting was the last meeting for Miguel, who has decided to leave the Group. Miguel has been active in the Unit since August 2007 and in the Group for many years. The Unit bids farewell to you Miguel!!

Poxx Bar Gig & SVS Paintballing

Although Summer is technically over, it isn't officially over for the SVS yet!! The first three weeks of September were filled with various activities including a session of Paintballing, a Canoe Training Session in which members attained their One Star Award, a Gig organised by members of the Unit which raised funds for the Unit and various social activities. apart from that members of the Unit added the Troop and Pack Summer Camps as part of their Tour of Duty or just to lend a hand.

Luca, Sam and some of the other Ventures organised a gig at Poxx Bar which featured The Highway, Retrophytes, DJ BOB and others. The evening acted as a social activity with some brilliant entertainment.

On Saturday 20th the SVS RV'd at Rinella for a session of paintballing. We all left the field with some battle scars but the worst was Terrence who was executed by firing squad (see photo above).

The weather was great for paintballing, not too hot and no rain clouds in sight! The teams were evenly split with 7 recruits againts 7 ventures in the (blue team and green team respectively). The green team had some more experience in the sport since all the members had played at least one time before while the recruits had never been paintballing. This meant that in the first couple of games the green team overpowered the blues because of a clearer strategy.

Later on in the morning the Blue team got used to the field and started getting back at the Greens even taking over their base in one of the games. Although the blues got on their feet towards the middle of the game the Green team still went home as the winners.

What's left of Summer?

There are 25 days left of summer and only three more activities for the SVS...

Some members of the Unit have put together a gig at POXX Bar set for the 12th of September. The bands are all friends of members of the Unit and are playing at it just for fun so the gig should be quite a riot. The confirmed bands include Retrophytes and The Highway (a band that entertained us all at the Group's Fundraising BBQ this year!)

The following day (Saturday 13th) we will be attending the North District Parade in Naxxar so it should be a very packed weekend----might be a bit difficult to wake up!!

Paintballing is to be the last Unit activity for the Summer -- to be held on 20th September at the Rinella Paintballing arena. This year the Unit is big enough to have two full teams, so I think we're going to see a bit of inter-company rivalry... last time round it was inter-Unit rivalry between us and our friends from SAC.

Summer Camp - Day 5

On the morning of Wednesday 20th August at about 0700, the Sliema Venture Scouts awoke for their last day at camp. After a hearty breakfast of eggs and bacon the Unit got down to striking camp and making sure that everything was left spic and span for Austin, our host.

Leslie, the Association's Commisioner for Training, paid us a visit and we showed him around the campsite even though we were in the process of dismantling.

The Recruits sorted out their kit for the navex and soon Mario, the truck driver, had arrived. After loading all the equipment we did a final check of the area and set off, with Charles towards the starting point of the Day Nav.

The solo day nav lasted til about 2030 when Charles picked us up from the forming up point, somewhere on the other side of the island. The exercise was the last of three navigation exercises preparing the recruits for their Gradex. Apart from being physically challenging the recruits also had to be precise in their navigation technique and were asked to carry out certain tasks related to the basic training.

A date has finally been set for the O-Coys GRADEX (27th-28th September). This is an overnight activity during which the recruits will attempt various challenges related to the basic training; this included a summer's worth of training in navigation, first aid, SAR & evacuation technique, estimation and ranging, bivvying, cooking and nutrition in the field, pioneering and rescue knots.
The activity takes the form of a Solo Day-nav (similar to that carried out during camp) which includes incident points; practical tests on the basic skills. After the day nav they will be required to build bivvies and cook a nutritious meal and be given a chance to rest. This is followed by a night navigation exercise carried out in pairs. At the fup of the night nav the recruits are to carryout a search and rescue and medevac.

The gradex can be seen as quite a tough activity...it is basically the culmination of all the training we've done throughout the summer.

SVS Summer Camp - Day 4

After another early wake up call (0700), a session of PT, a good wash and some Brekkie we boarded Charles' minivan ... destination Birzebugia.

We spent the morning and early hours of the afternoon exploring the depths of Ghar il-Friefet, one of Malta's largest cave systems which has been closed to the public for years. We got special premission to explore the site with thanks to the B'Bugia local council.

Following our adventure at Birzebugia we headed back to base for very thorough shower and an ikla maltija with gbejniet, sundried tomatoes, tuna, bigilla, olives and all sorts of other messy foods. After duties the recruits had another command task set to them... Gerry's Wall. This team challenge demands that all the team climb up a 10 ft wall using nothing but a rope.

We held another training medevac at the fields behind razett, that afternoon. This was a bit mroe intense than the previous ones demanding the o-coy to step up and push themselves more . To be succesful in a SAR and casualty evacuation drill the team must work quickly with clear cut direction (usually decided by a leader) . Everyone must pull their own weight and act quickly and responsibly lest the whole team suffers.

That evening we were joined by AGSL David, Skipper Timmy and Steffi Delia who joined us for the BBQ we had prepared for the last night at camp. Although we ate loads and had our fair share of laughs we tried to get to bed a little early because the next day was a crucial one for the whole of camp.

We awoke at 0700 and the first item on the agenda was PT. After some running, pushups and other exercises everyone got clean and settled down for b'fast. We were then off to St Thomas Bay for swimming and other adventures.

We explored the coast and practice some lifesaving techniques. Apart from practicing various tows and approaching drowning victims we held an skin diver competition.

After showers and a lunch of spaghetti with pesto sauce we were joined by Mr Juan Formosa, the founder of the Malta Fencing Association. He showed us various fencing strikes and parries as well as different ways of moving. Mr Formosa briefly explained the rules of the game and the different ways of playing then he organised and judged a short fencing tournament for us.

After our exciting afternoon of fencing, a sport that was completely new to all of us, the recruits got busy in getting ready for a general inspection. This is a thorough inspection of the site and the recruits' kits which is meant to be kept impeccable throughout the camp.

After a long day of adventure we gathered at the table in the courtyard for the, now traditional, pizza party night. Even though people were starting to fall asleep we still made some SVS Hotchocolate (the first batch for the new recruits) which went down nicely.

SVS Summer Camp - Day 2

Sunday 17th was a very long day for the Sliema Venture Scouts... We had an early start (0500) in Wied iZ-Zurrieq where we struck the bivvies and rigged for another abseil and climb. The climb was rigged on the opposite side of the valley, this time, for everyone to try something a bit different.

We spent the morning going up and down the valley, either scaling the 30m (or so) cliff face or descending it and trying out different ways of tackling the short overhang. Some tried to do it upside down, others tried to gracefully jump the distance.

At 1100 we were in the van and heading back to base and on our arrival we heard a little kitten screaming for dear life! He was trapped in our camo net and very close to asphyxiation. Luckily we cut him loose in time and gave him some water to drink. The little tyke was named James since James wasn't at camp and we missed him... also he shared James affinity to shade!!

After lunch we were back to our usual antics. The afternoon consisted of a series of command tasks and teambuilding exercises including a game called "electric fence". The recruits then started work on their pioneering project which was a Beacon Tower. This thing was quite tall and steady enough to keep all the Unit. They had one small problem... they had forgotten to bring a beacon. So with some quick improvisation and creative thinking by George, the tower was renamed the Bacon Tower and we just hung some bacon on it throughout the camp.

Was that all we had in store for the Oscar company that day?? Of course not! Next on the programme was a command task/medevac which included searching for three items: a rope, a first aid kit and a casualty and then using the found items to treat the casualty and lift him to rescue.

After the medevac we settled for a quick shower and hit the sack. We all took as much as we could from the little time we had to sleep because we knew that by 0700 the sun would be up and sleeping-in would not be so easy!!!

SVS Summer Camp - Day 1

On Saturday 16th August the SVS gathered outside the Sliema Scout Group HQ for a long awaited activity... the Unit's Summer Camp. Once again this was held in a farmhouse close to haz-Zabbar which belongs to our good friend Austin. He lends us the place for activities and this was the 7th consecutive Summer Camp to be held there.

We had an early start that Saturday morning; Mario the truck driver arrived at HQ at 0845 and we soon had everything packed. Charles, our trusty minivan driver, was on time as usual to ferry us to Zabbar.

By 0930 we were at Austin's and started setting up the site, preparing it for 5 days of activities. Upon finishing these duties we officially opened the camp and played a game of SVS Rugby... the hero of the game was Alan who (despite being the smallest player) scored the last goal.

After the rugby game we packed up and headed to Wied iZ-Zurrieq (aka Wied Babu) where we rigged for an abseil and a climb. For the recruits this was their first real abseil & climb and their first time rigging but everyone found something to do. AGSL Andrew spent the evening as abseil instructor showing the recruits proper abseiling technique while the VSL spent the evening belaying the climbers. We were also joined by our own Skipper Timmy who helped the AGSL with the abseil.

The abseil soon turned into a night abseil which was exciting for some of the new guys since it was their first time.

After striking the rigs we raised some bivvies for the night and cooked some grub. The night air was quite fresh and the stars were bright. We watched the lunar eclipse before hitting the sack to rest up... we knew we had an early wake up call in the morning!

Spanish Ventures arrive and SVS Blood Drive!!

Yesterday afternoon 20 Spanish Scouts landed in Malta and were escorted to the Sliema Scouts HQ. The contingent was composed of 17 venture scouts from Madrid, two of their leaders and another leader from Zaragoza. After getting aquainted with our HQ they ventured out into the hot and humid Sliema streets for their first swim in Maltese water.

We veered away from our regular meeting plan by playing games and ice breakers which included an ice breaking introduction popularly known as " the toilet paper game" and a game of charades during which we learnt some stuff about Madrid and Scouting in Spain and passed on our views on Malta and Scouting in Malta.

Saturday afternoon I met up with the VSL and one of the Ventures (Matteo) at the National Blood Bank where the three of us gave blood. Giving blood is very important since it is in high demand and the pint or so of blood given in one session can save up to three lives. Some blood groups are more rare than others but the bank are in need of donors of all blood groups!

This was our first experience giving blood but we will surely do it again. The Unit plans on sending representatives to give blood every three months and hopefully next time roung more people will be available to attend. Maybe we should open this for parents and friends too!! The blood bank is open from 0800 - 1800 everyday (including Sundays and public holidays) so if you want to help other people, take some time to visit the doctors and nurses at the national blood bank just outside St Luke's.

We should be seeing more of our Spanish friends so I will keep you updated!

July Round-up!

Hi all,

July was quite a heavy month! Filled to the brim with activities an functions brought to you by the Sliema Scouts...

Firstly we had the canoeing activity which was followed by the BBQ held at a beach along the Sliema coast. The SVS also held a training camp for the recruits at B'Bugia HQ which involved various basic skills exercises including a navigation exercise.

The O-Coy officially crossed the line on 18th July during a joint Troop & Unit Activity down at the SSG boathouse which included games on the water, a BBQ and a new and innovative method of crossing the line; limbo!

This year's Group Fundraising BBQ was held on the 22nd July, at the Razett tal-Hbieberija in Marsascala...we can say it was a massive success in every way! The attendance was spectacular, the food was great, the entertainment was funky and the atmosphere was beautiful! Thanks to all of you who attend and supported our Group once again.

In the pipeline we have three major activities planned before the end of summer:
The first is "OPERATION SHUT UP FOOL" which has three main parts. In the early afternoon some of the unit members will be heading over to the national blood bank at St Lukes to donate blood. The activity will reconvene at HQ where we are to hold a Unit in council to plan the programme for the rest of the year. This will be followed by an A-Team DVD marathon!

The next activity is a Summer Camp to be held at the SVS secret base of operations in the South of the island. The activity will include various activities, some new and some traditional but all will live up to the SVS theme for 2008 --- ADVENTURE!! The summer camp will include the Gradex for the O-Coy (more on this later).

The Executive are also hard at work planning a fundraising party which will include various live acts.... the set date is 5th September.

On Tuesday afternoon a plane will land at Luqa Airport carrying 20 Venture Scouts from Madrid. These guys and girls hail from the Scout Group 217 Matterhorn and they will be spending some time with the SVS!

Training Camp 2008

This weekend (11th-13th July) we held a training camp at Birzebugia Scouts HQ. The programme was jam packed with training exercises including rescue knots, drill, first aid, SAR and medevac drills and much much more. This activity was the perfect opportunity for the new recruits to practice the Scouting skills which they have learnt during the recent meetings.

On Saturday evening Charles picked us up and transported us to the starting point for the Night Navigation exercise. This was significantly longer and more challenging than navex I but all the teams made it to the finish point in time for a SAR & Medevac exercise. Then it was time to go home and get some rest!!

Sliema Scout Group BBQ Adventure

On Tuesday 22nd July we at the Sliema Scout Group will be holding our Annual fundraising BBQ. There are two main aims for this BBQ. One is to raise money in order to pay off the Group's expenses which include maintanance to our HQ and equipment, electricity, gas and water expenses and to buy new stuff in order to improve the quality of activities which we can provide to our members.

The second aim of the BBQ is to bring all the members together (whether they are Cubs, Scouts or Ventures) along with their parents and close family and friends in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. After all we are all part of the same community!

In true Scouting fashion the BBQ is always loads of fun and a great place to catch up with old friends or make new ones! Apart from the delicious meal there's always a raffle and some other fun activities including live entertainment and some awards to be given out.

Please come and support the Group, its members, leaders and the Council, who have kindly organised the event! This sort of activity only happens once a year and this is your chance to help out!

SVS at the Sea

Last Saturday was a double shot of Unit activities with an afternoon of canoeing which was followed by a BBQ.

The Unit spent an afternoon on canoes practicing various techniques and paddle strokes. This activity was the first step in a training programme which will culminate in an expedition to be held in September/October. Our exercise took us across Marsamxett Harbour and around Manoel Island, dodging boats in the process.

After rinsing off the canoes we headed to Sliema for a BBQ. The feast included burgers, sausages, ribs and chicken wings with a side of salad ala Rubei and George's secret honey sauce.

The BBQ also served as a farewell (or FOP) for Peter who announced his departure from the Unit in a heartfelt speech. Peter has been a member of our Group for about 8 years now and joined the Unit in 2006. He served as a member of the executive committee for a number of months and was recently helping out in the Troop as a junior leader.

The party did not end there; after letting the food settle in our stomachs we went out for a night swim. After that we cleaned up and headed home.

The next activity on our OPs Plan is a Training Camp for the recruits. This will be held in a top secret location next weekend (11th-13th July). The camp will include various training exercises and command tasks as well as a night navex.

Nightwalkers

Last Saturday night 10 brave recruits set out on their first navigation exercise with the Sliema Venture Unit. The recruits were transported to a secret location at which they had to discern their position.

Once the first challenge was completed the trainees set out in small teams to complete a night-long journey through rural Malta. The Unit was equipped with new two-way radios (the cobras) which enabled us to keep in touch.

A rendez-vous was set up somewhere in the middle of the route since we were doing reasonably good time although towards the end we witnessed sunrise and had to walk on despite the increasing temperature levels.

Unit Update

A lot has happened since my last post! Almost all the Ventures have finished their exams and the Unit is back up and running, even more than usual. On the 10th of June we were joined by the Stags who will officially join the Unit in a couple of weeks. They will form the Oscar Company and they have brought the Unit's number up to 20!!

Members of the M-Coy have started out a Tour of Duty with the other sections of the Group, helping out with the Pack and Troop meetings and Activities. They will also be attending the Unit activities and after a leave of absence because of A-Levels they will also be involved with the unit administrative tasks.

Today we head out for our first Activity in the field for about a month with a Training Navex for the O-Coy. Keep your eye on this page for news of the event, pictures and more.

Recent Activities included Uniformed Parades and ceremonies; Annual Parade, Fatima & the Investiture of the N-Coy members. We also helped out with the Malta Scrabble Club's first international open and manned an abseil for fundraising. Check out my previous posts for pix and other news.

After today's trekking and navigation training we will be holding a pioneering activity to give the recruits a chance to learn about engineering a pioneering structure.

So while most of you will be at home watching the football remember there'll be something yellow with black stripes stalking the Maltese countryside until the early hours of the morning.

The VSL recently invested 5 new Venture Scouts in an investiture ceremony that took place at our HQ. These guys weren't really new to the Unit, they should have been invested last October but for several reasons... mainly our activity programme being very tightly packed, it was held in May.

During the short ceremony the Ventures reaffirmed their Scout Promise and were welcomed into the Venture Unit with open arms. The ceremony was followed by refreshments and a display of logbooks and some souvenirs that the Unit has picked up in recent times. We chatted with the guests which included leaders from other Sections, parents and members of the Stag Patrol.

On the 10th of June some new recruits will be joining us for our Tuesday meeting. These guys are about to embark on a journey of adventure and challenge by joining the SVS!! After a summer of basic training including navigation exercises, medevacs, pioneering and what not they should be invested just like these guys in September.

The Ventures who have A levels are almost done from their great ordeal while the first year 6th form students are only just starting exams. Either way the Unit will be back to outdoor activities towards the middle of June and from then on there's no stopping us!!!... until resits

Malta Scrabble Club International Open

Throughout last weekend (2nd-4th May) the Unit attended the first Malta Scrabble Club International Open which was a weekend-long scrabble tournament at the Topaz Hotel.

The Ventures helped throughout the tournament as runners forwarding any challenges to the tournament coordinators. This was the first time any of us had been to a scrabble tournament which we found quite exciting - there was alot of competition throughout the weekend.

The first place prize went to a Maltese scrabbler while the 2nd and 3rd places went to two british players. During the prize giving ceremony Mr Joe Mizzi, president of the MSC, mentioned us and how we helped throughtout the weekend and presented a generous donation to the VSL.

This was the first tournament of this type ever hosted by the MSC but we're sure it won't be the last as there was already mention about next year's tournament--- which the SVS will be sure to help out at should we be asked again!

If you were anywhere near Valletta last Sunday (6th May) then you must have noticed the Scouts & Guides of Malta (& Gozo!) in what is their largest gathering every year; the Annual Parade.

At 10AM while all the other Groups were sorting themselves out the Sliema Group could be found in a side street in Floriana feasting on pastizzi, kindly supplied by Ronnie and the Group Council. The annual pastizzi eating (competition??) has become quite a tradition!
After filling everyone's bellies we were off to the granaries to form up right behind Iklin Scout Group. The eyes right order was given on approaching the Grand Master's palace where dignatories such as Scout & Guide Commisioners and the acting President of the State were positioned to accept the salute.

After the parade some of the ventures headed back t the Topaz hotel in Uniform to help out at the scrabble tournament which came to an end at 1900 that evening. The Unit will be back in uniform on the 16th of May for a procession in the Sliema area for the feast of Our Lady of Fatima.

On Sunday 27th April the SVS went out on a Sailing expedition with Captain David Cremona in order to try their luck at fishing.
The weather was brilliant and the activity was a success on the whole with only one person feeling sick over the edge but the only fish we got our hands on was tonn taz-zejt!

The SVS are a very adaptable team of people, we take part in activities both on land, in the sea, underground and in the air. Many of the Unit members are keen at several forms of water based activities; whilst Sam often participates in sailing competitions with his father and their team; Allen and Luca take enjoy canoeing with the Malta Canoe Federation and form part of a team in their canoe-polo league. The MCF held an open day today (1st May) which a couple of the ventures should have attended; i'll post any photos when I receive them.

This week is jam packed with several short activities; today (1st) the leaders along with a couple of the ventures took part in an open day at St Edwards by providing an abseil. In the mean time Allen and Luca attended the MCF open day. This weekend we will be helping out at a Scrabble Tournament which is organised by the Malta Scrabble Club and on Sunday (4th) we've got Annual Parade! Not bad for a couple of days!!!

SVS - A Story of Adventure

What's it like being a Venture within our Unit?

Let's take a look at typical life cycle of a Sliema Venture Scout--- his name of course, is Malcolm.

Malcolm joined the Unit just after his O-level examinations in June. He spent the first couple of weeks getting accustomed to the way things are in the Unit, attending meetings, joining in on the games and activities and getting his kit together for his first field activity --- a navex. A navex is a navigation exercise normally held at night. During his first 2 months in the Unit he took part in three of these; he got lost very badly in one of them but still made it to the end point. After each navigation exercise, at around 0600, he had to participate in a medevac exercise along with his fellow recruits.

Malcolm had a lot of good buddys in his company of recruits, they were 8 in all and they helped each other out with preparing their kits and equipment for activities and practicing the basic skills like pioneering and how to lift casualties.

During July & August Malcolm attend a course of first aid with St John Ambulance and also took part in a 'Job month' activity which is basically a fundraising initiative in which he did odd jobs for his friends and family members in order to make some money for the Unit. (Some of this money was later spent on upgrading the abseiling equipment which the Unit uses).

During Summer he also joined the other ventures in painting the Unit Room- everything was turned to urban camoflauge. This was done as part of their commitment (an activity show that the ventures really are committed to the Venture Unit and the Group).

Wow that was quite alot for his first Summer in the Unit!!! but there was one more activity - Bootcamp! Malcolm and his company's bootcamp was a 4-5 day camp held in summer which was organised by the older venture scouts.

This camp was like a non-stop marathon of scouting. He slept very little and did very very much. Apart from practicing the skills he hard learnt throughout his first summer like actually using rescue knots and building a ballista out of pioneering poles he also got to try out abseiling, rock climbing, caving, archery, canoeing and rafting. He also bonded even more with the other Unit members, the older ventures were very supportive and helped them to tackle the various challenges and difficult activities while his fellow recruits formed a strong team that never gave up!

On the last night of camp they all sat around a bbq eating and singing. The next day was the day they had all been waiting for ... the day of the GRADEX. Gradex is short for graduation exercise and is the last activity before they are recognised as full members of the Unit.

This activity involves a (approx) 23km day navigation exercise with incident points after which Malcolm was given time to build a bivvy, cook a meal, eat and sleep. At around 2300 he was awoken for the second part- a night navex. This was (approx) 16km and at the finish point the team had to complete a medevac.

He had never felt this tired in his life but when he finished the Gradex he knew that he had done some thing great.

The following week the company was invested in the Sliema Unit and they were all very proud at what they had accomplished.

September followed and this brought resits and school. Malcolm knew there was no way the Unit could keep up such a high rate of activities during school time !

On Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th April the Unit teamed up with the Troop to paint some of the walls at HQ. The first day was spent scraping and plastering the wall while some more plastering and painting was done on the second day.

There is still some more work which needs to be done. The Unit also plans on refurbishing it's side of HQ with new frames, a new table and some other suprises.

Abseil Camp - 4-6/4/08

Two weeks ago we held an Abseil Training Camp during which we held various sessions of instructions and went out in the field to practice what we learnt. We held two abseils; one at Wied Ix-Xaqqa, limits of Siggiewi and one at Top of the World, Madliena.

The weather was beautiful all weekend and the ventures got to try out various abseiling techniques which they hadn't ever done before including locking, practicing falling and some lucky ones even got to try a couple of inverted jumps.

Hi guys,

I hope you enjoy reading my Blog and hearing about my adventures with the SVS. for those of you who don't know me very well, I'm the mascot of the Sliema Venture Unit and I've been around for the last 6 years (I was born in April 2002!). 6 years is a long time in tiger years!

I've been keeping this blog for about a year and a half and I urge you to go back in time by reading past blog entries if you're interested in what we do.

Please feel free to add comments, I like to hear from you readers --- please don't send any hatemail, although I find it amusing it just get's deleted so don't bother wasting your time. Plus just because the comment is posted anonymously I always recognise hatemail as it usually comes from close to home!

1st Sliema Scout Group Easter Camp Days 5 & 6

After B'fast on Sunday we kitted up for some potholing. We explored some short passages inside the castle grounds but none of them went on for very long. We then returned to one of the pothole sites in the Buskett Valley which had been flooded when we went down it in January. this time the water level was very low and we went much further inside. There was also an abundance of very large mosquitoes which we had previously called the 'Stukka bombers'.

After our caving and much needed showers the ventures held a session of estimation exercises along with a couple of command tasks to test their skills. It was then time for another SPI session which was run by the VSL.

The evening saw the Unit heading out to Ghar il-Kbir to cook and eat rabbit (Opn Fenkata) like real cavemen; except the rabbit had been kindly prepared by Mr Tonio Mercieca one of the camp cooks!

Monday was the last day of camp and involved the taking down of all the tents and structures & packing them into two big trucks for transport back to HQ. As usual this felt like the longest day at camp - although it was sad to leave Verdala, we all needed to be home for a shower and a long, long nap.

1st Sliema Scout Group Easter Camp Day 4 (The Group Day)

Saturday was chosen as 'The Group Day' as in a day in which all three sectional programmes merged into one day of activities. Before b'fast the Unit were out taking the cubs for PT. After B'fast work started on the construction of the Flyfox/Aerial runway while the Troop were busy preparing the obstacle course. After a lunch of burgers and chips the Group was split into four teams which took it in turn to try out the flyfox, obstacle course and several fun and silyl games organised by the cub leaders.

During one of the silly games- the team is tied together with tape and the people in front are blindfolded.

After the activities the Group was busy preparing for the evenings activities which included mass said by Patri Ugolin an ex-missionary and hermit who lived for 10 years in Brazil and another 20 in a cave in Pwales. We were joined for mass by the St Alloysians who were camping across the path from us and the parents of many of the Scouts, Cubs and Ventures. This was followed by a wine and pizza night and the campfire (yes a real burning one this time!!!)

The campfire was MC'd by ASL James and some of the stand out stunts included the Unit's imitation of VSLs in general & the leaders' rendition of 'Hans & Ivan' which will long be remembered as an amazing flop.

1st Sliema Scout Group Easter Camp 2008 Days 2 & 3

Thursday was the Unit's second day at Camp and after flagbreak and B'fast we headed out to Dingli Cliffs to abseil. Unfortunately it started to rain s we quickly striked the rigging and headed back to camp. The Cubs had arrived and were busy pitching their tents.

To salvage what was left of the morning we headed to the cement patch infront of the Castle door to practice making helicopter Landing Zones which served as part of the Venture's advanced training.

After lunch we built a pioneering structure namely a trebuchet which was semi-succesful. We fired latex gloves filled with water from it which resulted in quite a bit of havock and mayhem.

On Good Friday we were lucky enough to have a private tour around the palace given by a gentleman who was born on the palace grounds (so he knows what he's talking about!).

After the Palace visit we headed straight out to the cliffs for another attempt at the abseil, which was successful.

After an afternoon of abseiling we headed back to camp and sat under the camo net for a session of reflections. The reflections were headed by Sam but everyone contributed somewhat; they were centered around camping, the outdoors, the environment and our place in it as humans, tigers and Scouts.

After supper we went back to the cement patch to prepare a night LZ and practice boarding a Helo. After midnight n good friday we whipped out the dairy milk and cooked up a pot of SVS Hotchocolate (aka Hococlit)

1st Sliema Scout Group Easter Camp 2008 Day 1

Just got back from a long and exciting Easter Camp at Verdala Castle. The Group Camp started on Sunday 16th March with an Advanced Party composed of members all the three sections with the Unit loading the Truck at HQ, the Pack setting up the interiors of the kitchen and the Troop pitching the tents, dining Area, kitchen and pioneering project. Our trusty QM, ASL Mark, had a hard day of work getting the water and electricity going.

The Troop programme started on Monday and the VSL, Rubei & I joined them on their activities to give a helping hand.

The rest of the Unit joined us on Wednesday. We spent the morning pitching our tent and preparing our campsite for the next couple of days. We were joined by a group of orphans from the Ursuline Sisters Orphanage who took part in various games and activities with us and stayed on for lunch. The President & Mrs Fenech Adami also paid us a visit and a short inspection of the site.

After lunch we were joined by some very special guests; Dion and his friends from Powerisers Malta (www.powerisers.com.mt). They gave us each a training session on the powerisers and we learnt how to walk in them and some of us even managed to do some jumping.

The Powersier activity was followed by tea and a session of memento making with the Troop. we branded pieces of wood which we then turned into woggles. After dinner we played a night game with the Troop before having some hotchocolate and hitting the sack.

Opn Bajjuforju

This weekend the leaders held a special outdoors activity, called Opn Bajjuforju, which involved mostly camping and lots and lots of eating.

We slept in the beautiful Wied tal-Isperanza only to be awaken by AGSL Ellul bright and early to get started with our fire building. We constructed a very large trench fire with a mudoven and cooked all sorts of stuff including; mini pizzas, meat fondue and massive chicken, meat and veg kebabs. Before all this we were treated to a three course b'fast by Akela Kirsten & AGSL David which was also delicious and after which we were treated to doughnuts by the GSL and a b'day cake to celebrate Skipper Timmy's 6th birthday (he was born on Feb 29th!!)

After all that eating we were considering on doing some exercise but instead we went to watch a very stimulating movie..... RAMBO!!!!

All of us had a very good time But we can't wait for easter camp which is going to be a Real blast.All the group will be camping in the grounds of verdala palace and we Have a good dose of scouting Activities inclunding abseiling, potholing, cooking, eating and Much much more!!!!!

Malta Marathon

Last Sunday, 24th February, we were amongst the many Scout Groups that helped out at the BMW Malta Marathon. Many Scouts could be seen along the route aiding the runners by giving them water, powerade, orange slices and sponges. We had the important job of sorting out the runners belongings in Deporres Hall, close to the finish, and giving it to the rightful owners after they finish the race.

Apart form helping out the organisers we also had two of our very own taking part in the half marathon! VSL Debono & Ian ran the 13.1 mile route in around 1hr58 minutes and placed 439th & 438th out over 700 participants who finished the race.

This was Debono's third time running the half marathon while it was Abela's first time.Some of the other Ventures are considering taking part in the event next year... I'd have no problem in winning (four legs better than two!!)

Next week a few of us will be attending an Anniversary Celebration hosted by our friends from St Michael's Scout Group who are now 10 years old! or is it 10 years young? We at Sliema are 10 times as old...congrats to St Mikes.

100th POST!!! Bridge Building at Pembroke

Last Sunday was the coldest day in 20 years (apparently!) but the SVS weren't at home in front of their fire places! We were out in the field practicing our pioneering skills by building a bridge. The site of our activity was pembroke were we had a good view of the raging sea.

Our next activity is the BMW Malta marathon which is to be held on Sunday. Ian should be running the half marathon with Debono while the rest of the Unit (and members of the Troop) will be helping out at the finish line! Come over to the Sliema ferries to support our runners.

Fire & Cooking

On Saturday night while most people were inside keeping out of the pouring rain, the Sliema Venture Unit were constructing a bivvy down in Mosta Valley in which they would spend that lovely night. Although it rained all night, we made the most of it, we all had a good night's sleep and woke up to the brilliant weather and scenery.

At 0900 on Sunday we were joined by our friends from the B'Kara venture Unit and we spent the morning and best part of the afternoon cooking --- and eating!!

We had quite a long menu; starting with meat pies which we made completely from scratch. This included frying the mince with onions and stuff, making the pastry, filling them and baking in a mud oven. For our middle course we had a delish lettuce and spring onion soup and for mains; flame grilled pork chops & patata l-forn.

After all that food we still had room for some hot chocolate so we set about showing the B'Kara Ventures how to make SVS Hotchocolate.

We had a great time on Sunday with the B'Kara ventures- i'll soon upload some pics of Saturday night's soup (the one we were in!!) and some photos from the Seminar organised by IHQ at MCC.

Our next activity is a bridge building session so that the ventures practice their pioneering skills.

Tunnel Rat Op

Today the Unit went potholing (or spelunking) in two manmade holes

in Buskett. The first set of tunnels seems to have been made by water services to give access to the pipes running underground.

The second hole was quite a bit different! The entry point was very narrow but then it opened up into a very long tunnel with loads of mud. It seems like this tunnel was made during the time of the knights as an escape route for Verdala castle. The tunnel doesn't reach the castle (but well past the castle gates!) though because it becomes blocked by soil.

Challenge 5

There was yet another challenge left that fateful day! the teams had to make their way up the hill towards the Selmun Barracks. Once there they met almost all the leaders and support staff that were present and went down into the dark underground tunnels under the barracks.

Potholing

The challenge involved entering the underground tunnels and making your way through a route underground. Once they reached the end the teams had to climb out of a chimney-like opening using nothing but a rope.

After the challenge the teams had to return their bikes to the owner at Selmun Palace and that was the end of the route.

At this point I would like to mention how many people were involved with the activity and without whom it wouldn't have been the same!

There was the VSL who did most of the planning, AGSL Andrew who took care of the climb and the pothole, Akela Kirtsten, ACSLs Claude & Keith who took care of the SAR & Medevac, AGSL Dave, QM Mark, Skipper T, who came to give their support after a full weekend out on a Troop Activity!! Then there were the people who we call Support Staff; these are ex-Unit members who are no longer in the group namely Ed Attard, Fusu, Michele, Chris (dumu) and Stefan Meli.
So that's it as far as the SVS Challenge goes... the points will be announced shortly and I will be sure to mention it here on my blog!

Our next activity is a potholing/caving activity to be held just after the new year.

Challenge 4

Canoeing

The 4th Challenge of the SVS Challenge was quite a surprise. No one expected, on such a cold winters day, to find an instructor waiting for them at Mistra Bay, along with his kayaks. The VSL was there waiting with dumu (SS) and Clark, owner of 'rugid adventure' and a keen canoeing instructor.

The aim here was to complete a route on canoe from Mistra Bay to St Pauls Island and back. The toughest part was always the way back, especially passing the headland where there was loads of wind coming through the straits.

On the way back the participants got the chance to explore a small sea cave in their kayaks.

Challenge 3

SAR & Medevac

The four digit MR lead the teams to Mizieb. After the uphill cycle there task was to locate the marshalls that were hidden within the 1km squared that the four digit MR describes: the Mizieb itself.

Upon finding the casualties (ACSLs Claude & Keith) they had to treat their urgent injuries and evacuate them to the nearest road for pickup by a medical vehicle. Claude had suffered a broken leg while keith was knocked unconcious and had a major external head wound!
